The preceding video is from the annual Weenie Roast concert in LA from 106.7 KROQ. Weezer did a pretty dope cover of “Kids” by MGMT and then broke into “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga.
As we roll into June, CurryPopTart.com is getting a bit of a facelift. This new layout makes the site a bit easier to navigate as everything you need is neatly placed in boxes on the column to your right.
You’ll also notice a new logo as our header, and the third box on your right is my personal Twitter where you can follow what I am doing throughout the day.
Just some cool new things that add to the functionality of the site. Look forward to a busy few days ahead as CPT covers the MTV Movie Awards tomorrow night and we live blog the E3 video game conference from June 1-4.
Meet the future of the internet, Google Wave. LifeHacker and TechCrunch have all the info on Google’s new experimental site that will give a whole new meaning to real-time communications:
Wave is clearly something we’ll need to see in action and, even better, use before we completely understand how it works. Like email, Wave has been developed as a standard that will be able to run on any server, so it won’t belong to Google. Anyone will be able to run their own “wave,” and that wave can compete with Google or do whatever it wants to. But since it’s created as a standard protocol, different waves can talk to and understand each other.
This addresses an issue that I (and many others much smarter than me) have had with Twitter—namely that it lives on one company’s servers, and your information is subject to whatever that company wants to do with it. RSS, email, and IM work using standard protocols that anyone can take advantage of, and since they use standards, I can, for example, send an email from Gmail to someone using Yahoo Mail and know that they’ll be able to read it without any problems.
Tech news weblog TechCrunch has a very detailed rundown of Wave (linked below) and the directions Google has taken it so far (it’s still incredibly young), but Wave is also very intriguing in the whole future-of-the-web way. It could amount to nothing, but considering the popularity and direction of Twitter and Facebook, the idea of a protocol that turns a similar sort of communication into an open standard sounds very promising.
Wave isn’t available in any practical sense to you and me right now, and much of the technology behind Wave requires HTML 5 updates that we won’t see completely implemented in most browsers for at least a little while, but you can sign up for Google Wave updates if you’re eager to stay updated on any new developments.
In contrast to Grand Theft Auto IV’s seedy biker gang expansion The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony is said to focus on the glitzy “high-end night life” of Liberty City. The second Xbox 360 exclusive episode will put players in the role of Luis Lopez, confirming previous rumors, as his part-time hoodlum duties are supplemented by full-time work for nightclub impresario Tony “Gay Tony” Prince.
According to the official announcement, “players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price.”
Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony is slated to release on Xbox Live this Fall for $19.99 USD or 1600 Microsoft Point. I had no interest in the Lost and the Damned, but this could be promising.
Meet the newest trailer from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Fanboys across the world are watching this with their face an inch from the screen and their pants around their ankles. If this doesnt give you a stirring in the pantalones, then I got nothing for ya.
Conservative radio host Mancow decided to see if waterboarding was truly torture on his show today. He lasted a whole 6 seconds before deciding that it was. Anybody who knows anything about Mancow in the Morning knows that he’s a failed Howard Stern wannabe shock jock, who has taken on a conservative approach to appeal to listeners and make a bigger name for himself.
I guess stunts like this is how he plans on getting more exposure. Notice the papparazzi like crowd who just happened to be videotaping from every angle. Well I guess as a blogger I am feeding into exactly what Mancow wants – free publicity. But seeing the douche waterboarded makes it worth it, couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
The first UFC game out in 5 years has quite a bit of anticipation and hype behind it. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is the hottest rising sport in the country right now. The PPV’s are doing monster buy rates and networks like ESPN are finally starting to take notice. It was only a matter of a time before a good developer got the rights to making video games. THQ the developer behind the popular WWE Smackdown series had the foresight and know how to make a MMA game and UFC 2009 Undisputed is leaps and bounds above any of its predecessors.
UFC games typically have been button mashers with unrealistic knock outs and ground game. Fortunately THQ has focused most of its energy behind the mechanics of the game engine. The ground game is done beautifully with reversals and counters pretty easy to pull off. There is also a solid grapple system, and you can trade punches “Fight Night” style as well. This is no button masher as you will need strategy and a good hand on the controls if you don’t want to be choked out in the first round.
The right analog stick is used mostly for the ground game, counters, and initiating a clinch. The face buttons are your standard kicks and punches and the shoulder buttons work in unison with the face buttons for combo’s and specific moves. It will take a good hour to fully get a grasp of the gameplay but there is a helpful tutorial that should be done when first starting the game.
My biggest complaint with the game is its lack of depth for replayability. The career mode is a bit repetitive as it seems like most of your time is spent in the gym and sparring then to actually get out there and fight. It’s pretty realistic to how much work a fighter puts into each match, but for video game purposes it can be tedious and slow up the fun of the game. You start career mode by creating a fighter, choosing their appearance, hometown, style of fighting, and weight division. THQ is hoping that a lot of replay value will come from people creating multiple fighters over different weight classes. You can even customize a fighters trunks, as they get more sponsorships you can add logo’s.
So the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes adaptation has been released, and I have to say a lot of my initial excitement has been subdued. The novel’s take place in a dark and gritty time in England, Holmes is a quiet and reserved character, Downey’s interpretation is almost too much Tony Stark in it.
Dr. Watson is more of the bumbling idiot of the two, who will state the obvious and bring a light hearted nature to the pair. It seems like Ritchie has reversed the roles, most likely to dumb down the material for a broader audience. Ritchie’s take just a bit over the top and too comical, kind of similar to the Steve Martin’s Pink Panther movies. I’ll give this a shot in theaters, but I’m certainly not excited any more after seeing that trailer.
In what is surprising but not shocking news, Tony Kornheiser has stepped down from his post in the announce booth at Monday Night Football. Quite frankly I have not been a major fan of his on there and think his skills are better utilized on PTI, in print, and on radio. His replacement has already been named, Jon Gruden former head coach of the Tampa Bay Buc’s will be taking over this spot.
Gruden is known to be pretty outspoken so this will be interesting to see how long it takes before we see blow up’s between him and Ron Jaworski. Here’s Korny’s official statement about Gruden being named as his successor:
“If I could handpick a replacement of a football guy, I would cast a net and drag in Jon Gruden,” Kornheiser said in a statement released by the network. “He is the two things you most want — smart and funny — and has the two things I don’t — good hair and a tan.”
