Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Review

June 30, 2009

transformers2

The sequel to 2007’s Transformers has been hailed as the summer movie event of the year. After drawing an impressive $201 million this past weekend it came very close to beating The Dark Knight’s record for all time biggest 5 day opening. It’s safe to say that regardless of what my review will contain, Transformers 2 is a box office smash. After watching this film, it is quite clear that Michael Bay and company have not lost a step and that every Transformers fan to step in to the theater for this one will be more than pleased by what they see.

The critics have not been kind to this film, but I think that they really missed the point of what Transformers is all about. From the beginning to the end, this film brings an unapologetic sense of violence, action, sex, and an expansive story that spans from 17,000 BC to now. No expense is spared in the making of this film and the plot is larger than life. But for a summer blockbuster would you really have it any other way?

The film picks up 2 years after the first. We find out that the Autobots are working with the Government to track down any remaining Decepticons. Optimus Prime has become a central figure for the government and the military seems to be taking a liking to the alien lifeforms. We also find out that Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBouff) is headed off to college which will put a rift in his relationship with Mikaela (Megan Fox) who is staying in town to help out at her Dad’s auto shop.

Megan Fox is stunning from her first appearance in the film and her fan’s will not be disappointed as their is ample cleavage and slow motion running. Sam heads off to school with his comedically stereotypical parents in tow. His dorm roommate is a hacker named Leo (Ramon Rodriguez) who is the film’s easy to hate sidekick. We are also introduced to Alice (Isabel Lucas) a girl who immediately takes a liking to Sam even though he is taken, and turns out to be more than we thought she is.

Blink 182 and Weezer headline free VirginFest

After months of speculation about the fate of the 2009 Virgin Mobile Festival, organizers have made an announcement that should please music fans who’ve felt the economic pinch of the recession: this year’s event is free.

With headliners Weezer and Blink-182, organizers say 35,000 free tickets will be given away to the newly branded Virgin Mobile FreeFest, to be held Aug. 30 at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.

Other acts scheduled to perform on the festival’s two main stages and dance tent include Franz Ferdinand, Public Enemy, Jet, the National, Girl Talk, the Bravery, the Hold Steady, St. Vincent, Wale, Taking Back Sunday, Holy F*ck, Pete Tong, Danny Howells and Lee Burridge.

“The idea was to do something that nobody else is doing,” Seth Hurwitz, chairman of independent concert promoter I.M.P., tells Billboard.com. “It really comes from a sincere desire to make people happy.”

Tickets to the 2009 Virgin Mobile FreeFest will be available to the public on June 27 through ticketmaster.com. Virgin Mobile customers and previous ticket-buyers to Virgin Mobile Festivals will be sent an e-mail that gives them the first crack at obtaining free tickets from June 25-26. Organizers declined to say how many of the festival’s tickets will be set aside for those people.

Ticketmaster has also agreed to waive its convenience fees for concertgoers who pick up their tickets at the Merriweather Post Pavilion or the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. Fans will also have the option to pay Ticketmaster to deliver their tickets. In light of recent controversies surrounding ticketing fees, Hurwitz, whose company will promote and produce the event, is curious to see what choice fans will make.

Futurama back for 26 new episodes

June 24, 2009

It was announced last week that the cult sci-fi cartoon Futurama was being brought back to life Family Guy style by Comedy Central for 26 new episodes. Well new details have emerged about the new ep’s and there will even be jokes about Twitter and the iPhone.

In an interview that you can read over at Wired.com, Cohen talks about the series’ miraculous resurrection and the upcoming new 26 episodes (which will make up two separate 13-episode seasons). “I keep thinking of the insidious possibilities of the iPhone, which I use every five seconds of the day,” remarked Cohen. “How you can track anyone anywhere, or market your taco stand to people standing 4 feet away. Or the sinister possibilities of Twitter, and so forth.”

Cohen went on to state that the upcoming season will explore the dark side of geek culture (like iPhones and Twitter) and will feature a “shocking sexual relationship.” The series will return to form – by exploring the “ins and outs” of a satiric future society. “The DVD movies, due to their long nature, had to put the universe on the line,” Cohen stated. “It’s something you have to have in 90 minutes of sci-fi animation, along with slower pacing and more music. But now we can get back to Bender saying mean, funny things.” We here at IGN TV couldn’t be more stoked to hear these mean, funny things.

RIP Ed McMahon, Dead at 86

June 23, 2009

Ed McMahon passed away earlier this morning in Los Angeles at the age of 86. The former Tonight Show funnyman had battled a litany of health problems in recent years including bone cancer and breaking his neck in 2007. McMahon was also facing financial woes with his property being foreclosed and carrying a large debt. While he is most known as being Johnny Carson’s sidekick on the Tonight Show, a younger generation will remember him from Star Search and his commercials for million dollar home sweepstakes.

Ed McMahon’s legacy in late night television will long live on through the Tonight Show. Who can forget his infamous catchphrase, “Heeeeeeeeeeere’s Johnny!” He will be missed.
